How much to feed a newborn baby in a day?
One of the biggest problems for a couple who have recently become parents is figuring out how much to feed. Know the complete schedule from morning till night.
Parents need to prepare a feeding schedule for their babies as per their age and feed the babies accordingly. Because newborn babies have a small stomach. So they can eat only 1-2 teaspoons of liquid food at a time. As children get older, their dosage also increases. This makes it difficult, at times, to know how much to feed your baby. However, if you’re bottle-feeding, it becomes a little easier to measure.
For breastfed babies
However, the eating capacity of different children is different. But most babies from 1 to 3 months are recommended to feed 7 to 9 times a day. Babies above the age of 3 months are fed 6 to 8 times in 24 hours. Whereas babies older than 6 months should be fed about 6 times per day. A light diet after 6 months helps in meeting the additional nutritional needs of your baby
As your baby grows, his ability to drink milk increases. He’ll be able to drink more milk at once, so you’ll need to feed less frequently. You can guess this by looking at the pattern of feeding of the baby.
Bottle feeding newborns
Bottle-fed newborns should be fed according to demand. For a newborn this happens every 2 to 3 hours. Whereas for a 2-month-old baby, it can happen every 3 to 4 hours. From 4 to 6 months, this should happen every 4 to 5 hours. When the baby is 6 months or older, it is recommended to breastfeed every 4-5 hours.
Do not feed outside milk to newborn babies
Babies under one year old should not be given formula or liquids other than breast milk. Juice or cow’s milk should also not be given. These do not give the necessary nutrients to the babies and they can upset your child’s stomach. You can give water to a child older than 6 months. No cereals should be given to babies between 4 and 6 months of age. Such small babies are not able to digest cereals.
How to know if baby is hungry
Young children cannot tell when they are hungry and when they are full. You just need to pay attention to their signals. Also to understand their eating habits. Parents may also see their children showing signs of hunger. Thinking of them, you can feed them milk.
Some signs like putting your hand inside the mouth, licking, opening the mouth and irritating show that your baby is hungry. On the other hand, overeating babies may experience abdominal pain, gas or vomiting.
This also leads to the possibility of obesity later. Therefore, children should be fed a little less than they want. Due to this, the digestive system of the child remains fine and health remains healthy.
